Holiday Style

Bring on the plaid and all the cozy knits! The holidays are fast approaching. Do you know what you are going to wear? I had the opportunity to attend the Sofi Stella Holiday Fashion Show to get the first look at some of this boutique’s newest items for the season.

For your fancier events they have some gorgeous dresses and I really loved this striped midi skirt.  It’s a nice weight and has a slight sheen to it.

Maybe I’m just in hibernation preparation but I was so drawn to many of the cozier items like these plaid leggings, plaid scarf, and the plaid wrap.  I definitely have a thing for plaid all the time but especially during the Christmas season.  I have a similar scarf that is one of my favorites.  Trust me, I was not leaving that place without the leggings and wrap!

Early in the show they featured this red vegan leather vest that I also knew would be mine.  It’s such a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down with blouses, tees, and tanks.  It has a removable tie belt that the model has tied behind her back but can also be tied in front.

I’m a total sucker for hats right now and especially if they are knit.  I’m partial to a big fluffy pom pom on top but I’m dying to try out the one without.  Why?  Because it has a hole in the top for you to pull a ponytail or bun through!!  How genius is that?  They have both in stock but they usually sell out quick so hurry if you want one!

I was totally drooling over this olive leather knit draped jacket!  I mean how fabulous is that?

My favorite part of the show was probably the little girl models.  They were absolutely adorable and so were their outfits.  If you have a young daughter in need of dressy or casual holiday clothes, be sure to check out Sofi Stella online.

Many of the items are pictured on their website but if you don’t see something please give them a call (734.457.2392) to check if it’s in stock.  Sometimes items sell so quick they never make it to the website.

My friend and fellow blogger, Nicole, joined me for this fantastic holiday preview.  Thank you to Josephine (owner of Sofi Stella) for having us and congrats on a well done show!  Cheers to a successful holiday season!

Kimono / Distressed Jeans / Peep Toe Booties / Megyn Kelly Today

Angie Kimono, similar HERE and HERE / Michael Kors Booties / Carolina Belle Jacket / Express Jeans / Nadri Necklace / Similar Earrings / Express Cami, similar HERE / Rebecca Minkoff Crossbody Bag, similar HERE / Rayban Sunglasses / Sheer Berry LipSense

I so love this style of kimono.  It is less robe and more boho fun!  In the summer I love it with a tank, cutoff shorts, and sandals and even as a swim coverup.  HERE is the same style in a different print and HERE is a slightly different style in a longer length that I also own.

On this fall day in NYC,  I wore mine with a blousy cami from Express that I’ve had for awhile.  HERE is a similar style.  I also chose these distressed skinny jeans that are so super comfy and 40% off.

I did some shopping in the city a couple days before at the original Saks Off Fifth.  It was SO much nicer than the one local to me!  One of the first things I spotted when I walked in was this Rebecca Minkoff Mini Moto Satchel in the clearance area for $70!  No brainer.  I am such a big fan of her bags, I can’t get enough of this color, and the price couldn’t be beat!  I found it HERE for you in another gorgeous color.  If you have your heart set on burgundy, HERE is another bag I’ve been stalking online which is currently 40% off!

Another major find were these Michael Kors peep toe wedge booties.  I had been on the hunt for the perfect pair of peep toe booties this fall and was beginning to think I wasn’t going to.  I was envisioning a block heel but couldn’t resist these adorable wedges.  (I did find some block heel peep toe booties at another store later that day which I also had to have!  They were both amazing deals that I couldn’t pass up.)

Like many of my trips, this trip to NYC was a business trip for my husband.  I had a lot of solo time and while I knew I would make some time for shopping, I made plans to fill some of the rest of my time.  I have been to a couple talk show tapings in LA in the past and thought I’d try to see if I could get last minute tickets to any in NYC.

I was able to get tickets to the new Megyn Kelly Today show for one of the mornings.  I had such a great experience that I decided to go back for a second show the next day when I found out I was able to get more tickets.  Both days I was lucky enough to be seated on stage behind where Megyn interviews her guests.  LOTS of unexpected tv time!

The whole experience at NBC was so nice for guests.  There was a very quick and orderly process to get us to the Peacock Lounge where we they had coffee and muffins waiting for us.  We spent a little time in there and received direction from staff before being escorted and seated in the studio.

The first day the guests were Nia Vardalos and Shawn Johnson. The next day Dr. Oz.  She is also incorporating non-celebrity guests to share some of their personal stories.  One of the days she had a family on that had lost two of their high school aged sons in one night due to an opioid overdose.  My heart went out to them.  It must have been so hard for them but the message they shared is so important.

Each day after the show Megyn stayed on set for a Facebook Live recording.  The audience was able to submit questions ahead of time and one of mine was selected the first day.  (I asked her who her favorite interview has been since starting the new show.  Her answer was the cast of This is Us.)

I was a little mixed on Megyn’s show before seeing it in person.  My view is that a month into it she was still looking to find her groove.  This is clearly something very different than she’s done before.  After seeing her in person, I give her a lot more credit.  She seems very genuine and wants to make a show that appeals to the audience.  She even asked for our input after the show both days.  I applaud her for taking a risk on something that is probably a little out of her comfort zone.  She has already made changes and will probably continue to.  I know she has a lot of critics.  I believe in giving people a chance.  I wish her the best on her new show and I highly recommend getting tickets to see it if you are in NYC.

Faux Fur Jacket / Lace Midi Dress / Velvet Heels / Waitress on Broadway

Elliatt Dress, similar HERE and HERE / TopShop Shoes, similar HERE / Express Clutch, similar HERE and HERE / Carolina Belle Jacket / LipSense in Plum

It had been a few years since I was in the Big Apple and I was so happy to be able to take another trip a few weeks ago!  It’s a city I never tire of.  The last time I was there is was in February and FREEZING but somehow I still had a blast!  However, I was ultra thankful to be able to experience it in reasonable fall temperatures this time.

My husband was there for business but was able to join me for a Broadway show the first night.  I’d love to see Hamilton but just couldn’t stomach the ticket prices.  I hear Dear Evan Hansen is another great show to see but those tix weren’t much better.  A friend recommended Waitress and we were able to get tickets for half off!  It was a cute and entertaining show that we both enjoyed.  I recommend it if you get the chance to see it.

I found this gorgeous lace midi dress at a Marshall’s in Denver last spring and have been dying to have an occasion to wear it!  I don’t know how it was $29.99 but yay for me!  I found similar dresses for you HERE and HERE in a couple colors that will be perfect for the holidays.

Because you can never have too much faux fur, I HAD to have this jacket that I found at TJ Maxx for less than $40.  It has a blush hue to it which I personally love.

I splurged (for me!) on these nude velvet heels last year.  I love them so much but I don’t recommend walking long distances in them.  I probably walked at least 20 long blocks in them round trip and was definitely ready to have them off when we got back to the hotel.  For minimal walking and standing they are worth it!  They are available in gray HERE and on major sale.  I also found a similar style HERE.

360Fashion / Vision & Mobility / Wearable Technology / Faux Fur / Vegan Suede Leggings

I had the opportunity to attend the media preview for the Wearable Tech Pop-Up & Exhibition recently.

Anina Net, founder of 360Fashion, has the vision to work with engineers to develop innovative and useful technology that can be incorporated in to wearable fashion.  Anina makes this technology available to fashion designers to make our lives easier, safer, and more fun!  Some are more functional than others for everyday life but the creativity is impressive in either case.

The LED ribbon is available in a variety of colors and sizes and is fully programmable to flash or not (can even be synced to music).  This bendable textile makes it easy to work with and comfortable for wear.  The handbag and feather flower were just a couple of accessories that caught my eye and I could see myself using and wearing in real life.  Some of the pieces, like the LED shorts pictured above, were designed for performance pieces that can be worn under pants, skirts, dresses with comfort while illuminating for a desired effect.

At the exhibition this status jacket debuted.  It’s machine washable but allows the wearer to press a button on the sleeve to indicate whether they are in a state of availability for interaction (green), possibly available if it’s urgent (yellow), or busy and unavailable (red) via a LED on the lapel of the jacket.  Other functionality could include control of a smartphone with the thought that users could be more aware of their surroundings versus looking down at a device while walking.

Illuminated jewelry and other accessories (ex. scarves) can serve not only as fun fashion statement pieces that can react to sound (ex. music) but can be used for safety mobility (ex. riding a bike in the dark).

I was able to try my hand at fashion design via virtual reality.  Imagine the possibilities for actual designers to be able to develop pieces in concept to see what works before actual production!

It’s exciting to think of the future wearable technology and how it will become a part of our daily life!

FashionSpeak / Plaid Skirt / Chambray Shirt / Moto Jacket

Soprano Skirt / J.Crew Shirt / BCBGeneration Jacket, similar HERE / Vince Camuto Booties, similar HERE / F21 Hat, similar HERE / BaubleBar Earrings / Plum LipSense / Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM

I recently had the opportunity to attend FashionSpeak, Michigan’s largest conference for the fashion industry.  The one day conference was created by the Detroit Garment Group who’s mission is to keep fashion talent in Michigan.  It was promising to hear the efforts being made to invest in Detroit in this industry.  Detroit’s first Garment District has even been created!

We heard from nationally recognized fashion experts including keynote speaker, Stacy London (of TLC’s What Not to Wear).  Stacy was definitely the highlight for me.  She was open, honest and witty about how she moved through the ranks in the fashion industry.  She was candid with participants who asked for advice.

One of my biggest takeaways was her take on being trendy vs. relevant.  Trendy can sometimes have a negative connotation.  While you may not want to adopt every of the moment trend you might want to have a wardrobe that is current or relevant.

It was my first time attending this event so I really didn’t know what to expect in terms of how to dress.  I assumed that there would some level of dressiness with a creative flair and I was correct.  Some people were dressier than others but I felt comfortable being somewhere in the middle.

I knew I wanted to wear a dress or a skirt of some sort.  I had just picked up this plaid ruffle midi skirt at Nordstrom Rack the week which I’ve never seen anything like.  I had to have it!

I wouldn’t normally wear a hat to an event like this but on this particular day it was necessary.  I will give a full review on this soon but I had just had the touch up done for my eyebrow micro-blading procedure the day before.  The color of your brows is very intense the first 3-5 days following this procedure and you have to keep petroleum jelly on them.  Needless to say, I wasn’t interested in scaring anyone with my brows in that condition!   I’ve had this hat for a few years but HERE is a very similar one.

I had an edgier top in mind but because I wasn’t sure of the event attire I decided to go a little more conservative with the chambray button down.  This shirt is so well made and will go with just about anything, even denim.

To add some edge back in I wore my black moto jacket.  HERE is a very similar one.  I didn’t necessarily plan on wearing it the entire day but, like most conferences, it was a little chilly!

If you follow me on Facebook, Insta, or Twitter, you may have already seen me post that I was actually chosen as one of the “best dressed” for this event by Detroit Fashion Magazine!  That was so nice to hear especially since I wasn’t really feeling the hat or shirt that day.

I had a great experience at the event and hope to attend next year!  I also look forward to see what Detroit continues to bring to the Fashion Industry.

Fall Colors: Color blocked dress / Long vest / Booties / Saddle bag

Mossimo Dress / Similar Vest / Dolce Vita Booties, similar HERE / French Connection Crossbody / Betsey Johnson Sunglasses, similar HERE / F21 Strappy Bralette, similar HERE

This is kind of the best.fall.ever!! I think it has been throwing a bunch of us for a loop on how to dress but you can still get your “fall” on with the right color palette!

I recently found this color blocked dress at Target on clearance for $9.99.  If you can’t find it in store it’s available for full price for less than $25 online.  It’s great for those warmer fall days being a dress but still in beautiful fall colors.  I love the tassels as well!

I layered mine with a long vest that I’ve had for at least a year.  HERE is a similar option to get the same look.

I’m still loving all of the strappy bralettes that you can layer under shirts and dresses to intentionally peek out.  I picked up this one a few years ago but HERE is a similar one that is only $5!  I practically live in bralettes these days.  So much more comfortable than a regular bra.  Many don’t come with padding so often I’ll just add my own if I’m wearing a top or dress that requires a little more coverage in that area if you know what I mean 😉  I have tons laying around that have fallen out of sports bras or bikini tops.  Just stick them in there and trust me they aren’t going anywhere!

Booties are probably my favorite fall shoe.  In fact, I just picked up 3 more pairs while in NYC this week!  I’ve had this Dolce Vita pair for several years and they are still in great condition.  DV booties are some of my faves. With the low heel I’ve put many miles on these.  HERE is a similar pair.

I hope you have fun plans for the weekend.  Mine will be action packed.  I went to a Redwings game last night with my husband and stepdaughter to check out their new arena.  Today I’m going to a Michigan State Football game – my alma mater – GO STATE!!  Tomorrow I’m going to a fashion show that will be previewing holiday looks.  Stay tuned for info on that!!

Express Dress / Sofi Stella Vest, similar HERE, HERE, HERE / Catherine Malandrino Mules, similar HERE and HERE / Express Sunglasses, similar HERE / BaubleBar Earrings / Rebecca Minkoff Handbag, similar HERE and HERE / She’s Apples LipSense

It’s all about layering in the fall.  A duster vest like this one is great for getting more wear out of your sleeveless dresses.  I also see a lot of future layered looks with the vest with tees, button downs, and jeans or leggings.  I recently bought this plaid vest from a boutique.  They are currently sold out but have more on order so make sure to check back soon.  I’ll keep an eye out too to let you know.  In the meantime, HERE is another one they have available in a great fall color.  I also found similar styles HERE and HERE.

Express is just killing it lately with the sales and styles!  This fit and flare choker dress is available in other colors and less than $13!

It’s funny how I spent months searching for the perfect mule loafers and now there are SO many cute styles out!  I found my Catherine Malandrino blush pearl mule loafers at TJ Maxx but HERE and HERE are similar styles.  I love them with just about everything: dresses, jeans, joggers, etc.  They are so comfortable and dress up a casual look a bit.

When She’s Apples, a limited edition LipSense color, was released I thought it was a fun pop of color for summer.  However, now that we have moved into the fall I realized how great it looks with all of the burgundies, mustards, and olives for autumn.

Thank you to all of you that wished me a happy birthday yesterday!  I had a wonderful day with some of my favorite people.  If you saw my Insta Story you know that I went to my favorite restaurant for dinner, Takoi.  It was formerly known as Katoi prior to a fire that shut down their business last winter.  They recently reopened in the same location.  Overall the look is the same but they did make some improvements including an added room with seating and some outdoor seating.  The menu changes every couple weeks but the flavors are always amazing!  They describe it as Thai-ish but it’s definitely not your typical pad thai.  Everything is literally a flavor explosion.  The dishes are meant to be shared.  Some are spicy but not all.  Don’t even think about skipping dessert!  This visit we started with the Khanom Krock which is a sweet and savory coconut cream cup.  Every vegetable looked amazing but we settled on the charred broccoli and grilled corn.  Neither disappointed and are must haves!  We also had the scallops which were cold minty and refreshing along with the short rib which was sliced and so delicious!  It cooks for two days!  We ended with the Banana Crunch Ice Cream but I kind of wanted everything.  It was the perfect ending.

Off the Shoulder Sweater Dress / Floppy Hat / Blanket Scarf

Express Dress / Leith Hat, similar HERE / Charles David Booties, similar HERE / Similar Blanket Scarf / Sugarfix by BaubleBar Earrings, similar HERE

Can we talk about the balloon sleeves on this off the shoulder sweater dress?  Although I initially hesitated to buy another off the shoulder piece (can you have too many?!), as soon as I saw the sleeves and the price (40% off!) it was a done deal!  I love the color and don’t have anything like it.  I wore it on a recent weekend getaway and received so many compliments on it.  It was super comfy and perfect for the fall.

I started the day with a blanket scarf, similar style HERE, and stuffed in my bag as the day warmed up.  Blanket scarfs are a great staple to carry you from the fall into the winter.  As I’ve mentioned before, they’re great for traveling as well.

I bought this floppy hat last year at Nordstrom but they have a similar style HERE.  I love a good wool floppy hat.  I’ve really been more aware of the sun the last few years and have noticed that it seems to be more intense in the fall even though the air temperature may not be as hot as the summer.  Wool floppy hats not only look cute but they protect your face from harmful UV rays.

If you haven’t been to northern Michigan, you need to put it on your list of places to visit.  It’s great for different reasons year round but the fall is one of my favorite times to visit.  My husband and I love to visit the wineries.  The scenery is so beautiful!

We had a cottage on Torch Lake that we sold last year.  We loved the area and have some great memories there but are at a time in our life that we weren’t getting as much as use out of it as we would like to with the 3.5 hour drive.  We still intend to visit the area and either rent or stay in a hotel.  We didn’t make it this summer but decided to make a spontaneous trip last weekend. We stayed at a newer hotel in Traverse City, Hotel Indigo, which we really liked.  It was in a great location with a rooftop bar.

We hit up some of our favorite spots and tried some new.  Here are some of our recommendations:

Breakfast: Harvest and The Plaza

Lunch: The Jolly Pumpkin

Dinner: Red Ginger, Mama Lu’s, Apache Grille

Drinks: Hotel Indigo Rooftop (heaters and fire pits available)

Wineries: Aurora, Bowers Harbor, Chateau Chantal, Bonobo

Off the Shoulder Ruffle Top // Dressy Joggers // Block Heel Sandals // Tassel Earrings

Express Joggers / Express Top / Dolce Vita Shoes / BaubleBar Earrings, similar HERE / Sheer Berry LipSense / Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM

If you know me, you know I loathe wearings jeans.  I do it but I much prefer just about anything else!  The jogger trend has been one of the best things to happen to my travel attire.  I wear them almost exclusively for air travel.  Not only are they comfy but you can look pulled together without much effort.

The next best thing in jogger fashion is the dressy jogger!  Same comfort factor but a nicer material.  Add a cute top and accessories and you are ready for a night on the town or a business casual event like the one I wore this look to.  Express appears to be extending their sale that was scheduled to end last Sunday so they are still a crazy good deal!

I also found this taffeta ruffle top at Express on sale.  You can wear it on or off the shoulder but off is a fave look of mine.  I’m not sure I’ve ever owned anything taffeta but I feel like there is a bad bridesmaid dress reference I should be making here!  I actually think the material is nice.  It gave it a dressier look and kept it’s shape pretty well considering the tuck I had going on.

I can see myself pairing these joggers with tees and sweaters to switch up the look as well.  Booties and mule loafers would make great choices but for this look it was all about the heels!  I scored these studded block heel sandals during the Nordstrom Anniversary but they are currently marked down for even less than I paid!

I debuted this look at a Travel & Lifestyle Detroit Event at the newly remodeled DoubleTree, a Hilton brand hotel.  We were greeted with mimosas and given a tour of their new suites.  The decor was tasteful and inviting.  They’re very spacious and would be especially nice if you are traveling with small children due to the Jack & Jill style bathroom separating the rooms.  They had a big and clean fitness facility, a Starbucks, a restaurant and a bar.  Our meeting was in the newly restored Crystal Ballroom which would be a great wedding venue.  The ornate painted ceilings were restored to their original look and simply gorgeous.  I honestly didn’t know we had a DoubleTree in Detroit.  I would definitely recommend it for anyone coming to the city for a sporting event, concert, wedding, and even business.  It’s a few blocks from Campus Martius and close to the newly opened Q-Line.  The hotel does shuttle to games as well.

We heard from the event sponsors, including a Traveling Mom affiliate, Inside Europe.  They are a great resource for planning the perfect European vacation and shared some goodies from Germany with us.

DoubleTree Chef, Eric Hurd, gave a live demo of how he prepares the Pork Belly appetizer we were served with our lunch.  YouTube celebrity, Daymon Patterson was with us and gave a live review.  He gave it 4 out of 5 stars!  I agree.  It was delish.  Daymon, aka @DaymDrops, the Food Titan, shared his story with how he got started and gave us some social media tips.

I was honored to be invited to this event.  It’s always nice to learn more about social media.  It’s constantly changing so knowledge is definitely power.  I really enjoyed meeting and networking with other local bloggers. As a result, there is a group of us that have connected and are attempting to meet up regularly.

Cable Knit Sweater Dress // Wide Belt

Gap Dress, similar HERE and HERE // Express Belt // Charles David Booties, similar HERE // Rebecca Minkoff Crossbody Bag, similar HERE and HERE // Natasha earrings, similar HERE // Express Sunglasses, similar HERE // Plum LipSense

There’s nothing better than a dress.  It’s an instant outfit that can be styled with a few simple accessories.

I love a good sweater dress and was excited to find this Gap cable knit sweater dress at Marshall’s recently for less than $17!  They also had it in black and I’ve seen it at a few stores.  So perfect for fall and you could easily add tights and taller boots to carry it into winter.  HERE and HERE are similar styles.

This definitely could be worn without a belt but with the longer length I thought I’d incorporate a fall trend: wide belts.  They were seen all over the runway this spring and are making their way to be a fall staple.  They’re a great way to define a waist and add some interest to not only a dress but a sweater, tunic, and even a coat.  I picked up this gold oval buckle wide belt and another stunner at Express yesterday for 30% off.

Speaking of Express, I went in there to pick up a pair of pants I’ve been eyeing when I learned that the whole store is up to 40% off now through Sunday!  Good news is that I got the pants for $18!  Bad news is I walked out with a bunch of other stuff.  Well is that bad news? Not when it was all a total deal including these sunnies that were on clearance plus an additional 40% off bringing them to less than $12!  HERE is a similar pair.

I have just about all of the LipSense colors in stock now and have been having so much fun playing with different colors.  This was my first time trying Plum but it definitely won’t be my last!  So gorgeous for fall!  I’m still amazed that I found something that actually stays put all day.

I had the honor of attending a small luncheon today with other local bloggers.  It’s always great to learn from others and share inspiration.  I’ll be sharing more information about my experience, and of course, what I was wearing in an upcoming post.  Have a great weekend!
