Choker Dress / Duster Vest / Loafer Mules

Express Dress / Sofi Stella Vest, similar HERE, HERE, HERE / Catherine Malandrino Mules, similar HERE and HERE / Express Sunglasses, similar HERE / BaubleBar Earrings / Rebecca Minkoff Handbag, similar HERE and HERE / She’s Apples LipSense

It’s all about layering in the fall.  A duster vest like this one is great for getting more wear out of your sleeveless dresses.  I also see a lot of future layered looks with the vest with tees, button downs, and jeans or leggings.  I recently bought this plaid vest from a boutique.  They are currently sold out but have more on order so make sure to check back soon.  I’ll keep an eye out too to let you know.  In the meantime, HERE is another one they have available in a great fall color.  I also found similar styles HERE and HERE.

Express is just killing it lately with the sales and styles!  This fit and flare choker dress is available in other colors and less than $13!

It’s funny how I spent months searching for the perfect mule loafers and now there are SO many cute styles out!  I found my Catherine Malandrino blush pearl mule loafers at TJ Maxx but HERE and HERE are similar styles.  I love them with just about everything: dresses, jeans, joggers, etc.  They are so comfortable and dress up a casual look a bit.

When She’s Apples, a limited edition LipSense color, was released I thought it was a fun pop of color for summer.  However, now that we have moved into the fall I realized how great it looks with all of the burgundies, mustards, and olives for autumn.

Thank you to all of you that wished me a happy birthday yesterday!  I had a wonderful day with some of my favorite people.  If you saw my Insta Story you know that I went to my favorite restaurant for dinner, Takoi.  It was formerly known as Katoi prior to a fire that shut down their business last winter.  They recently reopened in the same location.  Overall the look is the same but they did make some improvements including an added room with seating and some outdoor seating.  The menu changes every couple weeks but the flavors are always amazing!  They describe it as Thai-ish but it’s definitely not your typical pad thai.  Everything is literally a flavor explosion.  The dishes are meant to be shared.  Some are spicy but not all.  Don’t even think about skipping dessert!  This visit we started with the Khanom Krock which is a sweet and savory coconut cream cup.  Every vegetable looked amazing but we settled on the charred broccoli and grilled corn.  Neither disappointed and are must haves!  We also had the scallops which were cold minty and refreshing along with the short rib which was sliced and so delicious!  It cooks for two days!  We ended with the Banana Crunch Ice Cream but I kind of wanted everything.  It was the perfect ending.

Off the Shoulder Sweater Dress / Floppy Hat / Blanket Scarf

Express Dress / Leith Hat, similar HERE / Charles David Booties, similar HERE / Similar Blanket Scarf / Sugarfix by BaubleBar Earrings, similar HERE

Can we talk about the balloon sleeves on this off the shoulder sweater dress?  Although I initially hesitated to buy another off the shoulder piece (can you have too many?!), as soon as I saw the sleeves and the price (40% off!) it was a done deal!  I love the color and don’t have anything like it.  I wore it on a recent weekend getaway and received so many compliments on it.  It was super comfy and perfect for the fall.

I started the day with a blanket scarf, similar style HERE, and stuffed in my bag as the day warmed up.  Blanket scarfs are a great staple to carry you from the fall into the winter.  As I’ve mentioned before, they’re great for traveling as well.

I bought this floppy hat last year at Nordstrom but they have a similar style HERE.  I love a good wool floppy hat.  I’ve really been more aware of the sun the last few years and have noticed that it seems to be more intense in the fall even though the air temperature may not be as hot as the summer.  Wool floppy hats not only look cute but they protect your face from harmful UV rays.

If you haven’t been to northern Michigan, you need to put it on your list of places to visit.  It’s great for different reasons year round but the fall is one of my favorite times to visit.  My husband and I love to visit the wineries.  The scenery is so beautiful!

We had a cottage on Torch Lake that we sold last year.  We loved the area and have some great memories there but are at a time in our life that we weren’t getting as much as use out of it as we would like to with the 3.5 hour drive.  We still intend to visit the area and either rent or stay in a hotel.  We didn’t make it this summer but decided to make a spontaneous trip last weekend. We stayed at a newer hotel in Traverse City, Hotel Indigo, which we really liked.  It was in a great location with a rooftop bar.

We hit up some of our favorite spots and tried some new.  Here are some of our recommendations:

Breakfast: Harvest and The Plaza

Lunch: The Jolly Pumpkin

Dinner: Red Ginger, Mama Lu’s, Apache Grille

Drinks: Hotel Indigo Rooftop (heaters and fire pits available)

Wineries: Aurora, Bowers Harbor, Chateau Chantal, Bonobo

Off the Shoulder Ruffle Top // Dressy Joggers // Block Heel Sandals // Tassel Earrings

Express Joggers / Express Top / Dolce Vita Shoes / BaubleBar Earrings, similar HERE / Sheer Berry LipSense / Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM

If you know me, you know I loathe wearings jeans.  I do it but I much prefer just about anything else!  The jogger trend has been one of the best things to happen to my travel attire.  I wear them almost exclusively for air travel.  Not only are they comfy but you can look pulled together without much effort.

The next best thing in jogger fashion is the dressy jogger!  Same comfort factor but a nicer material.  Add a cute top and accessories and you are ready for a night on the town or a business casual event like the one I wore this look to.  Express appears to be extending their sale that was scheduled to end last Sunday so they are still a crazy good deal!

I also found this taffeta ruffle top at Express on sale.  You can wear it on or off the shoulder but off is a fave look of mine.  I’m not sure I’ve ever owned anything taffeta but I feel like there is a bad bridesmaid dress reference I should be making here!  I actually think the material is nice.  It gave it a dressier look and kept it’s shape pretty well considering the tuck I had going on.

I can see myself pairing these joggers with tees and sweaters to switch up the look as well.  Booties and mule loafers would make great choices but for this look it was all about the heels!  I scored these studded block heel sandals during the Nordstrom Anniversary but they are currently marked down for even less than I paid!

I debuted this look at a Travel & Lifestyle Detroit Event at the newly remodeled DoubleTree, a Hilton brand hotel.  We were greeted with mimosas and given a tour of their new suites.  The decor was tasteful and inviting.  They’re very spacious and would be especially nice if you are traveling with small children due to the Jack & Jill style bathroom separating the rooms.  They had a big and clean fitness facility, a Starbucks, a restaurant and a bar.  Our meeting was in the newly restored Crystal Ballroom which would be a great wedding venue.  The ornate painted ceilings were restored to their original look and simply gorgeous.  I honestly didn’t know we had a DoubleTree in Detroit.  I would definitely recommend it for anyone coming to the city for a sporting event, concert, wedding, and even business.  It’s a few blocks from Campus Martius and close to the newly opened Q-Line.  The hotel does shuttle to games as well.

We heard from the event sponsors, including a Traveling Mom affiliate, Inside Europe.  They are a great resource for planning the perfect European vacation and shared some goodies from Germany with us.

DoubleTree Chef, Eric Hurd, gave a live demo of how he prepares the Pork Belly appetizer we were served with our lunch.  YouTube celebrity, Daymon Patterson was with us and gave a live review.  He gave it 4 out of 5 stars!  I agree.  It was delish.  Daymon, aka @DaymDrops, the Food Titan, shared his story with how he got started and gave us some social media tips.

I was honored to be invited to this event.  It’s always nice to learn more about social media.  It’s constantly changing so knowledge is definitely power.  I really enjoyed meeting and networking with other local bloggers. As a result, there is a group of us that have connected and are attempting to meet up regularly.

Cable Knit Sweater Dress // Wide Belt

Gap Dress, similar HERE and HERE // Express Belt // Charles David Booties, similar HERE // Rebecca Minkoff Crossbody Bag, similar HERE and HERE // Natasha earrings, similar HERE // Express Sunglasses, similar HERE // Plum LipSense

There’s nothing better than a dress.  It’s an instant outfit that can be styled with a few simple accessories.

I love a good sweater dress and was excited to find this Gap cable knit sweater dress at Marshall’s recently for less than $17!  They also had it in black and I’ve seen it at a few stores.  So perfect for fall and you could easily add tights and taller boots to carry it into winter.  HERE and HERE are similar styles.

This definitely could be worn without a belt but with the longer length I thought I’d incorporate a fall trend: wide belts.  They were seen all over the runway this spring and are making their way to be a fall staple.  They’re a great way to define a waist and add some interest to not only a dress but a sweater, tunic, and even a coat.  I picked up this gold oval buckle wide belt and another stunner at Express yesterday for 30% off.

Speaking of Express, I went in there to pick up a pair of pants I’ve been eyeing when I learned that the whole store is up to 40% off now through Sunday!  Good news is that I got the pants for $18!  Bad news is I walked out with a bunch of other stuff.  Well is that bad news? Not when it was all a total deal including these sunnies that were on clearance plus an additional 40% off bringing them to less than $12!  HERE is a similar pair.

I have just about all of the LipSense colors in stock now and have been having so much fun playing with different colors.  This was my first time trying Plum but it definitely won’t be my last!  So gorgeous for fall!  I’m still amazed that I found something that actually stays put all day.

I had the honor of attending a small luncheon today with other local bloggers.  It’s always great to learn from others and share inspiration.  I’ll be sharing more information about my experience, and of course, what I was wearing in an upcoming post.  Have a great weekend!

Velvet Moto Jacket / Distressed Jeans

Badgley Mischka Jacket, similar HERE, HERE, HERE // Express Jeans // Banana Republic Tee // Tory Burch Handbag, similar HERE // Ray-Ban Sunglasses // Vince Camuto Booties, similar HERE // Similar earrings HERE // Sheer Berry LipSense

Who else has been challenged dressing the last few weeks?  I LOVED having a super hot end of September but dressing for the season made it tricky.  I feel for you that live in warmer climates.  It has just started to cool down a bit in the last few days so now my focus is back to fall wear.

I’m seeing velvet out already and I’m loving it!  Traditionally it’s reserved for the holidays but it was a big trend last winter and I see that it’s carrying into this next season.  Another trend I’m still seeing is moto jackets.  Velvet + Moto = edgy lux!

I found this Badgley Mischka teal velvet jacket at TJ Maxx this week.  I saw it at another store a few days prior in burgundy and was dying that it wasn’t my size!  Both of these jewel tones are great for fall and will carry you into the holiday season.  I rounded up these other great velvet moto jacket option for you HERE, HERE, and HERE.

I got so much wear out of these distressed jeans last summer.  Technically Express calls them leggings but they button and zip like a regular pair of jeans.  They are super stretchy and comfy and still available.  Even better, the whole store is 40% off right now.  Guess where I’m going after I finish this?!

I own a couple pairs of Vince Camuto booties that I’m pretty obsessed with.  This pair is no longer available but HERE is a similar style.

I don’t know why I’m constantly drawn to burgundy, maroon, wine, oxblood…..whatever you call it….but it’s a color that is perfect for the season!  I picked up two new pairs of earrings at TJ Maxx with this color and this is one of them.  I honestly don’t even know what brand they are.  I ripped them off the packaging and tossed it right away because I was so excited to get them on my ears!  They are a bead tear drop hoop with fringe but HERE is a pair that will get you a similar look.

I’m breaking out my fall dresses to wear on repeat while I can.  The season is short my friends!!  I can see this velvet moto jacket being the perfect top layer for them too.

F21 Top, similar HERE // Mossimo Skirt // BCBGeneration Heels, similar HERE // Rebecca Minkoff Crossbody // Stella & Dot Bracelet // Express Sunglasses, similar HERE // LipSense in Lexie Bear-y (2x) and Bravo (1x)

I adore all things girly and nothing scream ultra feminine like a tulle mesh skirt!  They immediately catch my eye when I see them in store but the truth is I’ve never found one that lays right beneath the waistband.  That is until now!  I spotted this pink mesh midi skirt on a recent trip to Target and I love that the tulle lays flat under the waistband.  On top of that, it’s a midi length that someone my height (5′ 4.5″) can actually wear without looking like my legs got chopped off!  This is possible with the mini skirt that is layered underneath a shear panel of mesh.  Being able to see the silhouette of legs lengthens the look.

I have a couple different ways that I envision styling this skirt but since we still have warm weather I decided to start by pairing it with this cropped stripe top that I picked up a few years ago.  HERE is one that would give you the same look.

As if I need another pair of sunglasses, I found these at Express last week and couldn’t resist them!  I was expecting them to ring up at $29.99 but they actually were $9.99.  I don’t see the exact pair online but HERE is a similar pair on sale for $19.90 (all of their sunnies are on sale for that prices and there are tons of cute pairs).  The sales at Express seem to fluctuate regularly so keep checking back if they are back to full price by the time you see this.

When the kids go back to school you know it’s only a matter of time before one comes home with some sort of illness.  We’ve got our first sore throat in the house today.  Hopefully it doesn’t become much worse than that.  I’ve got the essential oils diffusing on repeat to keep the rest of us healthy and hopefully help make my step daughter feel better sooner.

Potter’s Pot Dress, similar HERE and HERE // Free Press Bra // Levi’s Jeans // BCBGeneration Shoes, similar HERE // Rebecca Minkoff Crossbody // Ray-Ban Sunglasses // LipSense in She’s Apples and Bombshell with Sand Gloss

Embroidery is a trend that is carrying into the fall.  I’m also starting to see quite a few mesh pieces out.  I picked this midi dress combo of both at TJ Maxx recently.  While I’m wearing it more boldly here, I’ve also worn it with a black tank, denim shorts, and booties.  I’ve even worn it as a beach cover up.  HERE and HERE are similar styles.  Search “mesh dress” on forever21.com and there are tons of options available.

For me this is more of a night look but some girls would rock it in the day.  I say “go for it” if you have the confidence to do it!  I chose this velvet longline bra underneath and my favorite high waisted jeans which are a fantastic deal.

I bought this olive crossbody during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and it sold out pretty quickly.  It’s back in stock now and 50% off!  That’s an even better deal than I got!  I’ve already used it a ton this summer but I’m super excited to use it with my fall wardrobe.

I’ve been having fun experimenting layering my LipSense colors.  This stuff is seriously amazing!  Not only is it smudge proof, kiss proof and waterproof, it lasts up to 18 hours.  Seriously!! You apply in in 3 layers.  I started by using the same color for all three but now am finding that I can get more variety by using more than one to change up a look.  Here I am wearing one layer of She’s Apples which is a super fun bright orange red that I toned down with two layers of Bombshell which is a barely there neutral color.  I topped it with Sand Gloss which is a super light beige with a subtle shimmer.

It’s been a busy month or so and I haven’t been able to keep up with posting as much as I would like to.  I’m hoping to get back on track with summer winding down.  I hope you have fun plans for the holiday weekend.  We have friends coming into town and are going to the U2 concert again!

Did you witness the solar eclipse today?  It was at 80% where I live.  I didn’t have the glasses so I didn’t stare directly at it but it was still cool to see the glow change and temperature dip.  There certainly was a lot of buzz about it and it was nice to see the country come together on something.

Now back to our regularly scheduled ruffles and off the shoulder!  Two things I never get sick of.  I found this ruffle striped skirt on clearance for $12.99 when I was in Santa Monica a few weeks ago.  It’s since been reduced to $9.99 online.  Small was the smallest they had available in the store but I would have preferred an XS for a snugger fit.  It’s also available HERE.

I picked up this off the shoulder tee at H&M last year.  I sized up for a roomier fit but I actually would have liked a size smaller for this tucked in look.  I bodysuit would work as well.  HERE is a similar top.

I scored these block heel studded sandals during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  They are pretty comfortable and the neutral color will go with just about anything.

These tassel earring from Stella & Dot are no longer available but HERE is a similar pair on clearance for less than $7 plus use code SAVE20 when you check out for an additional 20% off!  I just love the Sugarfix by BaubleBar collection!

Ruffled Skort // Gladiator Sandals

Zara Skort, similar HERE / F21 Tee / Mossimo Sandals / BaubleBar Earrings

A few weeks ago I took a family trip to Malibu.  I’ve visited a few times before but had never stayed there prior.  It was so beautiful and peaceful!  We definitely utilized our time there but did venture out to other areas of LA as well.

On an afternoon in Santa Monica my husband suggested shopping.  He, nor his 16 or 20 year old kids, are big shoppers so I knew my window would be small.  We literally went in two stores before the shopping excursion ended!  The first store was Nike (for him).  The second was Zara.  I pretty much raced to the back of the store to raid the sale racks before it was time to move on.

I scored two adorable ruffled pieces including this ruffled skort.  I got it for $12.99 but it’s now online for $7.99!  Be sure to scroll down to check your store’s availability if you don’t see your size.  I also found a similar style HERE.

The skort is high waisted so a cropped top would work well or you could tie up a tank or tee like I did here.  This v neck tee is less than $6 and comes in a ton of colors.  You never can have too many white tees!

My gladiator sandals are a great Valentino knock off.  They are less than $30 online but I’ve heard that they are on clearance in store for $10!  Either way, they are a great deal and a quality shoe.

I mentioned these Bauble Bar beaded earrings recently and am so happy to report that they are now available online!  They are so fun for summer.

If you haven’t noticed, I have a major thing for all things blush.  I have a super cozy winter cardi in blush but thought this lighter weight beauty would be perfect for late summer into fall.  It was one of my first Nordstrom Anniversary Sale purchases and unfortunately it sold out pretty quickly.  I’ll let you know if I see it get restocked but I also found this other blush cardi that is worth checking out.

Now is a great time to stock up on some flowy relaxed tees.  Mine is from Express and HERE is a similar style in a bunch of colors on sale for $10!  The high low style is great tucked or untucked.  It can be worn with virtually anything – shorts, skirts, jeans, leggings, and joggers!

My booties are also from the Anniversary Sale and still in stock!  These are so comfy and will get tons of use this fall.

These are literally my favorite pair of shorts.  They are a size bigger than I normally wear in jeans but I think it just makes them that much more cozy.  I slip on a belt and I’m good to go.  I was lucky enough to find mine on Poshmark for $20 but HERE is a similar style for full retail.  You should definitely check out Poshmark to look for your size though.  I did a search for my friend the other day and found a couple pairs for her for great deals.  Search for Rag & Bone Boyfriend Shorts or Rag & Bone Destroyed Shorts.

I can’t believe tomorrow is Friday already!  I just got back Tuesday night from a family vacation in Malibu, California.  It was a perfect little getaway.  We enjoyed the beach, ate yummy food, hiked, and helped my step son move into his next apartment.  If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen my Insta Story videos of some of our adventures including some tourist activities like my first visit to Rodeo Dr. (window shopping only!) and to Sur (didn’t see Lisa or a single cast member!).  There were a few celebrity sightings, one of which I have no idea who he is and already forgot his name but the kids knew who he was.  The other was Anthony Michael Hall, almost unrecognizable, sitting at the table next to us at a sushi restaurant.  I’ll always remember him as the goofy kid is some of the best movies of my childhood.
