I recently had the opportunity to attend FashionSpeak, Michigan’s largest conference for the fashion industry. The one day conference was created by the Detroit Garment Group who’s mission is to keep fashion talent in Michigan. It was promising to hear the efforts being made to invest in Detroit in this industry. Detroit’s first Garment District has even been created!
We heard from nationally recognized fashion experts including keynote speaker, Stacy London (of TLC’s What Not to Wear). Stacy was definitely the highlight for me. She was open, honest and witty about how she moved through the ranks in the fashion industry. She was candid with participants who asked for advice.
One of my biggest takeaways was her take on being trendy vs. relevant. Trendy can sometimes have a negative connotation. While you may not want to adopt every of the moment trend you might want to have a wardrobe that is current or relevant.
It was my first time attending this event so I really didn’t know what to expect in terms of how to dress. I assumed that there would some level of dressiness with a creative flair and I was correct. Some people were dressier than others but I felt comfortable being somewhere in the middle.
I knew I wanted to wear a dress or a skirt of some sort. I had just picked up this plaid ruffle midi skirt at Nordstrom Rack the week which I’ve never seen anything like. I had to have it!
I wouldn’t normally wear a hat to an event like this but on this particular day it was necessary. I will give a full review on this soon but I had just had the touch up done for my eyebrow micro-blading procedure the day before. The color of your brows is very intense the first 3-5 days following this procedure and you have to keep petroleum jelly on them. Needless to say, I wasn’t interested in scaring anyone with my brows in that condition! I’ve had this hat for a few years but HERE is a very similar one.
I had an edgier top in mind but because I wasn’t sure of the event attire I decided to go a little more conservative with the chambray button down. This shirt is so well made and will go with just about anything, even denim.
To add some edge back in I wore my black moto jacket. HERE is a very similar one. I didn’t necessarily plan on wearing it the entire day but, like most conferences, it was a little chilly!
If you follow me on Facebook, Insta, or Twitter, you may have already seen me post that I was actually chosen as one of the “best dressed” for this event by Detroit Fashion Magazine! That was so nice to hear especially since I wasn’t really feeling the hat or shirt that day.
I had a great experience at the event and hope to attend next year! I also look forward to see what Detroit continues to bring to the Fashion Industry.
